The Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower is an Iconic Symbol & Soundtrack. It is also a Functioning Bell Tower with 14 Mechanized Bells that are now operated by a computerized system. It has a Roman Numeral nine foot wide clock on each of all four sides of the tower. It has been on The Campus of The University of NC at Chapel Hill over 95 years. Construction began January 1931. The Tower was dedicated on Thanksgiving Day in 1931, The Tower is 172 feet tall & has a 128 step climb, It is built of NC Brick. The same style as the buildings around Polk Place. The trim is made of Indiana Limestone. The Tower’s Arcade, which features Guastavino Tiles that are Reminiscent of The Carolina Blue. Construction began with funding from John Motley Morehead and Rufus Lenoir Patterson. It is regarded as a Beautiful, Picturesque, Iconic Landmark and is a Symbol of The UNC- Chapel Hill Tradition.
